Globalization and masculine space in India and Fiji
This chapter discusses the effects of global media representations on Indian masculinities. Indian men often find themselves attracted to foreign lifestyles which are celebrated in global media. This attraction may destabilize men’s sense of identity. Men often address their anxieties by emphasizing a male identity rooted in men’s free use of cosmopolitan spaces. Nationalist Indian men who were attracted to Western forms of economy and statecraft found their Indianness in Indian women’s restriction to the home. Contemporary Indian men who are attracted to cosmopolitan fashion find their identity by contrasting their free use of cosmopolitan spaces with women’s home-based religious and familial duties.
