In European history, tattoos have been used in order to brand slaves or delinquents. Nowadays, an impressive collection of tattoos can be found amongst inmates in penitentiaries all over the world. Rather than forced upon, though, these tattoos have been set on a voluntary basis largely for the purpose of inscribing personal or/and group identity. As such prison tattoos have become expressions of power, empowerment and control.
