ABSTRACT
Network design is both a science and an art. The scientific foundation for network design is based upon mathematics that provide the applicable tools for solving such problems as:
Determining the circuit operating rate required to interconnect two geographically separated LANs
Deciding where to locate data concentration equipment
Routing a multidrop line to minimize the cost associated with a circuit configured to connect multiple network locations onto a common transmission facility
The art associated with network design involves one having knowledge of the capabilities of different types of LAN and WAN communications equipment and how such capabilities can be used to develop a variety of network configurations.
