ABSTRACT

This specimen is a stillborn fetus of undetermined sex (Yakovlev case number BR W-37-63; referred to here as Y37-63) with a crown rump length (CR) of145 mm estimated to be at gestational week (GW) 17. The brain was cut in the sagittal plane in 414 35-μm thick sections and is classified as a Normative Control in the Yakovlev Collection (Haleem, 1990). Since there is no photograph of this brain before it was embedded and cut, we turned to the comprehensive atlas that Retzius published in 1896 showing whole fetal brains in medial, lateral, superior, and inferior views and midline sagittally cut brains. Figure 7 , taken from Retzius (1896), shows the midline sagittal surface of a brain from a specimen that is at the same age as Y37-63.
