However, cannabis has been used for medical purposes for thousands of years, as a relaxant or pain reliever. For example, in Colorado there is much excitement about a product called Charlotte’s Web, derived from cannabis and named after the child who took it as a treatment for her epilepsy. The effects on the condition are described as “miraculous”. In the UK, the fi rst and only legal medicine derived from cannabis is for sufferers from multiple sclerosis – Sativex made by GW Pharma. GW is working on an epilepsy treatment following the Colorado success. There are some suggestions that more than treating the symptoms of chronic conditions, cannabis may even have curative properties for serious illnesses such as cancer.
