ABSTRACT

Sir Frank Cooper had first briefed editors from the major media organisations on 7 April. He explained the concerns of MoD about the release of harmful information, and also warned about Argentine misinformation, such as exaggerated statements about the build up of their forces on the Falkland Islands. MoD found the response positive, with some relief from the editors that there were no proposals for legal controls. But the concern at the possible fettering of editorial freedom was evident, particularly when it came to speculation about military intentions. Might this not, it was suggested, be as confusing to the Argentines as it was helpful? There was no way to stop the foreign press speculating. MoD suggested that as a general criterion, editors should imagine what they would want to see broadcast or in print if they had a son aboard the Task Force. It was implicit that the fact that this meeting had taken place would not be publicised.
