ABSTRACT

The multitude as a set of singularities can be recognized as unity only in action. But its action is itself a proliferation of singularities. The only unity that the multitude can attain consists in the recognition of the common. But if, within the multitude, the common is only the construction of a common way of acting, then unity will also be common. And perhaps in that case it would be better no longer to speak of unity, to avoid giving the impression that the common is something organic. The common is living labor, and therefore the only unity possible.
