ABSTRACT

Sport has developed phenomenally since the 1970s and this has had a direct impact on children. The evolution from amateurism to professionalism, despite the long and hypocritical resistance of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), changed the face of sports, as did increased financial, political and media interests. Improved access to television worldwide brought sports into a new arena and changed the meaning of winning, not only for athletes but also for financial, social and political interest groups.
