ABSTRACT

It is widely accepted that the practice of sports is beneficial to children and adolescents and has a positive impact on their physical, mental, psychomotor and social development (Bouchard et al. 1994; Metzl 2002: 3-16). Sport can help young people to become more confident and progressively more autonomous, evaluate their own progress and set objectives. It reinforces their self-esteem and concentration, and teaches them to discipline themselves, work in a team and handle defeat and victory, as well as encouraging fair play and socialization.
