ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the information technology (IT) and the impact that developments in IT have had on management, particularly in the financial services sector. There are many different issues ranging from the advantages for the organization and the customer of improved services, delivery and communication channels to the difficulties that can be encountered in introducing the new systems. The chapter also emphasizes that there is a need to be concerned with security and protection of information and to put procedures in place to deal with this. It then focuses towards the use that is being made and that can be made of IT rather than Management Information Systems (MIS) but it is useful for to have some background on information systems. The fact that MIS is a combination of human and computer based resources makes it quite clear that the computer or the technology is by no means the sole provider of the system or information it produces.
