Yes, it does. No, it does not. The debate here is not issues within the subject; the debate is the subject itself. Some argue that design and technology (D&T) is not where food studies should be located in the school curriculum, others argue that it is. This chapter will look at the debate around food within the D&T curriculum and will consider the historical context, gender issues, food and health, vocational education and practical issues. It is hoped to offer a range of opinions so that you can draw your own conclusions and decide – does food fit in design and technology?
