ABSTRACT
One of the most significant technical developments affecting the size and functioning of London, like any other contemporary urban area, was the development of mass public transport. This chapter discusses the evolution of the means of motion in the capital from walking and private horse carriage through road-building, coaches, steamers, horse-drawn buses, surface railways, trams, tubes and motor buses.
