The “Why” of Inquiry Learning and Curriculum Integration

Why take time to build on the curiosity of young learners? Why teach children how to seek answers to their questions? Why bother to look for ways to integrate the curriculum in meaningful and relevant fashion? Why go to great lengths to enable young learners to work cooperatively, self-direct, and self-manage? Why encourage students to become independent and interdependent thinkers and doers? These questions may remind one of the seemingly incessant “why?” questions which fl ow from the mouths of our youngest learners, but your authors have asked themselves these same questions. Therefore, this chapter serves to remind us “why.”
