Take a moment to visualize a very small boy and an equally small girl playing happily in a sandbox. Watch the boy as he places several empty containers on the side of the sandbox and then realizes for the fi rst time in his life that he can line them up from smallest to largest. “Look!” he exclaims with excitement. “Look what I did!” His friend, however, ignores him because she is busy with her own realization: If she picks up a handful of sand it will stay put unless she opens her fi ngers. Furthermore, how fast the sand drains out is dependent on the spread of the fi ngers.
