ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses test review based on the psychometric properties of tests and items quantifiable attributes that can be used as indicators of the technical quality of educational measurement instruments and the overall judgment of the quality of tests, mainly on reliability and validity. Typically, these judgments are made by educational measurement specialists (psychometricians) as part of the process of test development. The chapter explores the relations of the scores of a test with other variables as a source of validity evidence. The basic concepts discussed originate from the three psychometric theories: classical theory, item response theory, and generalizability theory. The chapter provides definitions of properties of items that are essential to examining the quality of tests and are especially important in the assessment of ELL students. It also discusses score correlation and test score differences. The chapter explains different forms in which the consistency of measures can be examined depending on the characteristics of tests.
