ABSTRACT

The notion of access in some usages relates to a social model of disability. In some versions of this model, a distinction is made between ‘impairment’ as a physical entity and ‘disability’ as the barriers placed on those with impairments by society through physical arrangements or negative attitudes. In this perspective, improving access is associated with seeking to remove barriers (See Shakespeare, 2006, for an outline of social approaches pp. 9-28 and criticisms of them, pp. 29-53).
