ABSTRACT

The idea that archaeological investigation is powered by design has run through every chapter up to this one, linking what is done with its purpose, reconciling the diverse agendas that fieldwork must satisfy, balancing its objectives, its ability to read the ground, its social context. Design is the strong flexible axis of Field Research Procedure, kick-starting and concluding every stage. Design makes archaeological investigation productive and dynamic, prevents projects losing their way and becoming stagnant. Design gives archaeology its persuasive edge in the wider world.
