But despite Popper's attempt to draw a sharp line between discovery and testing, it was his attempt to give a formal account of the testing of scientific theories that opened the way to a new philosophy of science which took into account the rationale of discovery. This arose out of the tension, which is evident throughout Popper's work, between the formal and the practical, which we attempted to expose in the distinction between logical and methodological falsification.
