ABSTRACT

This chapter identifies and explains why social theory matters for social work. It begins with an overview of the relationship between the two, before dispelling a number of the inaccurate and unhelpful myths which have grown up around social theory in recent years within social work. The chapter sets out the core themes and values uniting both social theory and social work before providing a more in-depth discussion of the nature and constitution of social theoretical knowledge and how it can be applied to social work. The chapter concludes by drawing together and reflecting on the main aims and intentions of the book.
