ABSTRACT

Little research has yet been specifically aimed at determining whether there is any arithmetic relationship between structure and success. Most writers, at least until very recently, have propounded management principles and theories drawn from experience of a very small sample of business enterprises. Personal reminiscences of this kind serve a useful purpose in illustrating specific management practice but they are individually an uncertain foundation for any general management theory. Management theory should only gain acceptance when it is reflected in widespread, successful management practice. What is needed is much more solidly-based research in this whole field.
