ABSTRACT

We rely on the media to assist us in making sense of the changing culture of the society in which we live (Barnett, 2011; Briggs, 1961, 1965, 1970, 1979, 1995; Coleman and Ross, 2010; Hajkowski, 2010). The media help generate the confidence we need to navigate our social relationships, and, therefore, we need to be able to trust its compass. However, a number of recent events have contributed to our losing this sense of trust. This chapter identifies some of the more significant of these events in the United Kingdom (UK) and discusses their implications for public trust and confidence more widely.
