ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces sport facility management, an important consideration for sport managers as well as a unique industry segment. It discusses the strategic management process within the framework of facility management. Operations management is the process by which these strategies are implemented. For the sport manager, operations management or operational planning is two-fold. The sport manager must be concerned with macro-level operations – how the strategic plan is put into action in the organization – and on the micro level – how individual events and activities are planned and executed on a daily basis. Techniques essential for effective strategic and operational planning such as SWOT analysis, management by objectives, and the Balanced Scorecard are introduced. The sport facility is a critical resource that helps the organization to realize its mission and goals. It has been argued that sport facilities may anchor area development, particularly in urban areas, and will help to drive economic activity.
