ABSTRACT

With a globalizing and diversifying population, the need for cultural competency in personality assessment is growing. Historically, personality disorders and assessments have largely been created with European American or Caucasian perspectives and samples, and recent growth in attention to cultural and diversity issues has been somewhat limited to language translations (Dana, 2000; Hall, Bansal, & López, 1999). Many existing assessment instruments and procedures do not go beyond language differences to consider how culture influences ethnic differences in beliefs and behaviors (Dana, 2000). Research is needed to examine and address cultural oversights in psychological assessments that could interfere with a reliable and valid interpretation of personality test results with diverse populations.
