ABSTRACT

301Although Bīsha (بيشه, aka “Bīsha Fortress,” qal’at bīsha) is an official governorate of Asīr Province, for the most part its culture differs from that of the rest of Asīr (Philby 1952, 108). It lies near the lower eastern inland area of the Sarawāt Mountains and is comprised of ca 250 villages mostly spread throughout the east of Biṣha town, although some are in the slopes that rise to the west. Being extremely fertile with plentiful water supplies from the wādis and underground lakes, Bīsha is known for a wide variety of dates that are cultivated on literally billions of palm trees.
