ABSTRACT

Obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD) are classed as anxiety disorders. The main features of OCD, obsessions and compulsions, are described in this chapter. Obsessive-compulsive disorder is one of the most complex forms of anxiety disorder and is distressing and even disabling. Psychological and biological theories have been advanced to account for OCD, but they are parallel explanations and neither is conclusive. The psychological explanations are more specific than the biological ones. Current methods of treatment are psychological, pharmacological, or both.
