ABSTRACT

How Green is My Valley: The Tempest at Central Washington University: Jessica Pribble on Green Costume Design As so often happens, a single theme or idea presented itself in many disparate areas of my life simultaneously. In the spring of 2012, I began to grow my own vegetables for the fi rst time. This constant engagement with the soil, even in my very modest patio garden, kept me thinking about how far things must travel to arrive in my kitchen. This was my second year living in rural Washington State and my frustration with traveling multiple mountain passes to fi nd even a basic fabric store was beginning to come to a head. Distance, travel, gasoline, pesticides: These things were only loosely connected in my mind. It was also about this time I began speaking with Ellen Jones about sustainability in the theatre. The result of those conversations was my participation in the writing of this book.
