ABSTRACT

What should we do about the perceived gap between what research suggests is ‘best practice’ and what actually happens in the real world? How can we speed up the process by which innovations are adopted in healthcare? Which strategies should be used, when and how in order to implement improvements in patient care? These are all frequently heard questions within a healthcare environment, whether talking to policy-makers, managers, clinicians or educators. And the answer is very often a contingent one – ‘well, it depends . . . ’. But what does it depend upon – and more importantly, what can we do about it?
