ABSTRACT

When the subject of the sentence (I, he, she, etc.) wants to do something, the construction хотеть + infinitive is used (see Unit 8): Я хочу поехать в Россию ‘I want to go to Russia’. However, when the subject wants someone else to do something, the normal construction used is хотеть + чтобы, with the verb going into the subjunctive mood. The verb in the subjunctive mood is the same as the past tense form of the verb:

Я хочу, чтобы Маша была там.

‘I want Masha to be there.’

Я хотела, чтобы Маша была там.

‘I wanted Masha to be there.’
