The search for exceptional ability in pre-school children is, in general, a search for potential, as it is not usually possible to see evidence of extremely high performance in the very young. However, exceptionally and profoundly gifted children often demonstrate quite remarkable achievement in the very early years. The precocious development of speech, movement and reading are extremely powerful indicators of possible giftedness. Of course, not every child who walks, talks or learns to read before the usual age is even moderately gifted; nonetheless, when these skills develop at extremely early ages, they are generally linked to unusually advanced intellectual development.
