ABSTRACT
Guildford and Croydon have some resemblances, but many and more marked differences. Both were Anglo-Saxon settlements at the northern foot of the chalk uplands of Surrey, through which, of old time, the Wey and the Wandle, each arising where is now the Weald, had each cut its channel. Yet these two towns have had very distinctive histories and developments.
