ABSTRACT
Between 1997 and 1999, a small-scale geoarchaeological project was undertaken at Ghent University (Belgium).1 This study was mainly concerned with the reconstruction of the landscapes in western Belgium and during the Roman occupation, essentially the first four centuries of our era. But as the Roman landscape cannot be isolated from earlier evolutions, it is the pre-Medieval landscape as a whole that was looked at.
