ABSTRACT

Regulatory and nonregulatory archaeological venues approach the use of new technology such as geographic information systems (GIS) and predictive modeling in different ways. There are important concerns for cultural resource managers and land planners because archaeological projects that are monitored by federal or state laws involve different factors that need to be taken into consideration to comply with the legislation. The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation has minimal guidelines for the implementation and application of GIS and predictive modeling for archaeological research that is accomplished to comply with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. This chapter presents current guidelines for the implementation of predictive models and describes how several states, U.S. territories, and tribes are interpreting them. Recommendations are also provided, from a regulatory archaeology perspective, for cultural resource managers and land managers who desire to use this type of analysis in archaeological research.
