ABSTRACT

A range of civilian information-seekers have traveled to Iraq since 2003 in order to unearth hard-to-fi nd data. They have included journalists, security consultants, military-affi liated anthropologists and historians, and entrepreneurs. The author has traveled to Iraq as a journalist, security correspondent and “think tank” analyst on numerous trips since 2003 and has found it is eminently possible to enter Iraq, travel within the country, and to undertake rich and rewarding research programs. On the other hand, it is also expensive, time-consuming and presents numerous security risks and ethical quandaries.
