ABSTRACT

In any form of teaching there are two key issues that need to be taken into account when planning learning experiences. Firstly we need to think about who the learners are and secondly we need to consider what their learning needs might be. It is important that all lessons are appropriate to the age and stage of development of the learner. This knowledge will infl uence the learning activities selected and the ways in which they are presented. So although choosing what is appropriate to teach will be related to the curriculum there are other factors that also play a part. It is important to ensure that all the learners being taught can participate and that their learning builds upon their existing skills and knowledge. To add to these planning issues it is also important to recognise that each learner progresses at a different rate and all of these individual needs must be met as well as the needs of the
