ABSTRACT

Chapter 1 provides an introduction to Native American religion, or religions. It begins by explaining why it is important to study Native American religion so as to better understand the history of religion in America, as well as some of the challenges encountered in such a study. It then takes up common characteristics and differences among Native American religions. And finally, it considers the Native American encounter with Western religion, first at the hands of Spanish, French, and British missionaries and then as pursued by the United States during its formative years.
