ABSTRACT

This chapter explores detectives perceptions of and experiences with investigations, and also focuses on detectives perceptions of the importance of evidence, victim offender relationship, victim resistance, weapon use by offenders, and alcohol involvement. Detectives need evidence to build a case against a suspect. Many detectives commented that their efforts are challenged by lack of evidence, particularly a lack of evidence that indicates an individual was raped, or lack of a clear, credible victim statement. Detectives explained that if the rape just happened, it is slightly more likely that the victim will go to a hospital rather than call police or go to a police station. Weapon use improves victims credibility because the suspects claim that the sexual activity was consensual seems ridiculous if police can prove a weapon was used. Rape is a serious allegation, so before proceeding with an investigation, detectives reflect on evidence and victim reliability. Alcohol use, which is also common, presents detectives with even more challenges.
