ABSTRACT

This book highlights key findings from the analysis and concludes with policy implications and suggestions for the treatment of rape victims drawn from this research. While the treatment of and sensitivity towards victims have improved over the last few decades as a result of the availability of rape victim advocates and Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners, the stigma surrounding rape, stereotypical and false views of rape and victims, and revictimization of rape victims as they negotiate the criminal justice and legal processes persist. Undoubtedly, myths and misperceptions about rape and rape victims persist, as do victim-blaming attitudes. Detectives interviewed indicate that to reduce rape, potential victims should: reduce alcohol consumption, be aware of surroundings, and stay with friends. The book does not intend to ignore male rape victims or detectives perceptions of or experiences with them.
