ABSTRACT

The previous chapters have been largely focused on your immediate concerns as a student teacher and as a new teacher settling into school. They stressed the importance of finding the right school and of taking advantage of opportunities for professional development. Your experience of your first year is going to influence how you approach your second year. You might, for example, go into your second year feeling very confident of meeting new challenges, or you might have found the first year a struggle and feel very uncertain that you want to continue. You might feel ready to embrace further responsibility in your department or you might be quite content to focus on your own classroom teaching. Whatever your particular circumstances, you now have greater experience and a sense of ‘having been there before’. We look at the implications of this for your confidence, your developing teacher skills, your status and your future role in teaching.
