ABSTRACT

This book has looked at learning to teach and the early stages of your teaching career. Earlier you were invited to look back on your training programme and your motivation to teach. You considered how your understanding of teaching may have changed and the importance of personal values in teaching. You went on to identify your strengths as a teacher and areas to develop in your teaching. Your concerns were placed in the wider context of reports into initial teacher training and strategies for developing your teaching were discussed. The second section of the book looked at your first two years of teaching and began by considering preparation for the first term and the nature of your induction year. It looked at thriving as well as surviving and went on to describe difficulties you might encounter in the classroom. Strategies for developing your teaching were described and placed in the context of keeping a ‘life-work balance’. In Chapter 6 your enhanced status in your second year of teaching, and how you could draw on previous experience in preparing for the start of the new term, were considered. Finally, further areas of concern were reviewed along with new areas of responsibility such as the tutor role and curriculum coordination. You have now had two years in school. In this final section the key messages about learning to teach and your future career in teaching are discussed. Of course much is unpredictable, who knows what might be happening in your personal life let alone your career, but some of the challenges can be signposted. This chapter focuses on your continued development as a teacher and will help you:

• consider key messages in developing your career in teaching; • appreciate the value of joining a community of practice; • consider the varied nature of CPD;
