ABSTRACT

Like many psychology majors, I had vague plans of a career as a clinician, but two experiences disabused me of that notion. I spent a semester volunteering at what was then the California School for the Blind and Deaf, working with a (partially) deaf and (mostly) blind teenage girl. After that experience, I decided I didn’t have “the right stuff” to be a clinical psychologist. (My ignorance of the field led me to assume that all clinical situations would be as challenging as my volunteer experience had been, but regardless, it was the right call. I don’t have the patience to be a good clinician!) And more importantly, I discovered that I was fascinated by research.
