ABSTRACT

So far we have been looking at a traditional British picture of Arthur, and at an Artorius with British connexions who could be seen as a plausible import and intruder. But the latter and his possible connexions with ‘Scythian’ folklore leave us with another question: how many more Arthurs might have gone unnoticed, for whatever reason? And how much earlier than the traditional fifth/sixth-century British date can we expect to find them?
