ABSTRACT

The context in which women and men experience their career development is affected by the socio-political factors of their countries (McMahon, Bimrose and Watson 2010). In Argentina, women who are 45 to 65 years old have experienced profound political changes during their careers. Following years of alternating between military governments and weak civil governments, in 1976 a violent military dictatorship started which is remembered for the disappearance and assassination of 30,000 men and women, torture, ideological persecution, and mandatory exile (Barrancos 2010). For many of the women participants in this study, this terrorist phase of Argentinian history coincided with their university years, impinging upon their studies. In 1983, democracy returned and stabilised the country (Suriano 2005).
