ABSTRACT
If contrasts are big in crop farming they are least as large in animal production. You find striking polar opposites and uncountable variations in between with respect to land use, housing, technologies, feeding and levels of production. Just imagine the differences between the gigantic hog farming systems of factory-like character in North Carolina, US, family run dairy farming in Switzerland, pasto-ralism in Kyrgyzstan and backyard farming in Nigeria.
