The New Age movement gaining ground in the West also found a resonance in the former Soviet Union, where it shared similarities with some indigenous sects and movements influenced by extrasensory perception, hypnotism, and other phenomena, dating back for centuries: a new manifestation, in some ways, of the dvoeverie . . . which had persisted after the adoption of Christianity in Kievan Rus’.1
