ABSTRACT

I invited Marie, whose mental health dif®culties arose from what can best be described as `complex trauma', to contribute her experience to this book as I had watched her relationship with the institution from the sidelines, as her therapist over a long (outpatient) therapy. I concluded that she was in a particularly good position to chart the changing relationship between therapy and the hospital, as well as having an amazing and courageous tale to tell. The interview takes place two years after the end of the therapy. As well as the individual therapy, Marie attended an adapted form of the DBT skills training programme that was being piloted in Southampton at the time (Sambrook et al. 2006).
