ABSTRACT
My presentation will take a circuitous route. Before showing how institutionalized power is used to impose a certain definition on the situation, I will place the discussion in the context of debates about the thinking of “primitive” and “advanced” peoples. After introducing the notion of “oracular reasoning” (a concept which is central to the understanding of the events which follow), I will examine closely the interaction between a board of examining psychiatrists and a mental patient.
