ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to develop a pragmatic storytelling theory of spirituality practices in organizations. We will look at some pragmatist theory related to spirituality, such as William James’ pluralistic unity of spirit, John Dewey’s assertion that the life of doing is not split from the spiritual, and Peirce’s spirit of an age. Then we can look at some contemporary writers on spirituality in organizations, from de Certeau to Twotrees. Finally, I perform a pragmatic storytelling reading of Ian Mitroff and Elizabeth Denton’s (1999) Spiritual Audit of Corporate America. In the quantum age, quantum physics, and quantum metaphysics are reconciling in ways that affect pragmatic storytelling of spirituality in organizations.
