ABSTRACT
In 1926, Greater Lebanon became the “Lebanese Republic.” Alongside Arabic, French became the official language and the leading language for business life. the political power lay in the hands of the Maronites. Education, which had already been in the hands of Christian schools and missionaries, was now led by Europeans and Americans. A new elite emerged, educated with European teaching methods (Hourani 1992:399–400).
