ABSTRACT

Anyone reading this book from cover to cover, with little prior knowledge of publishing, would wonder how editors ever sleep. There is so much to do and so much to fret about. Being an editor is a very difficult, but rewarding, job and there are indeed many editors who would rightly claim that they are not getting enough sleep. The pressure of work is intense, and seems increasingly so. All publishing houses are driven by growth for financial and strategic reasons. This is particularly so in the big houses where there is finance to support growth. Productivity and performance are constantly emphasised and scrutinised. It is actually quite difficult for new editors to go through a gradual process of development. Many are given a great deal of responsibility very quickly. These days even smaller independent houses need to put their editors under pressure.
