ABSTRACT
Almost without exception, the papers included in this volume voice reservations and second thoughts about the category of initiation, although some aremore thoroughgoing in their skepticism than others. But since there seems to be general ^ and growing ^ dissatisfaction, it is worth reflecting a bit on the genealogy of scholarship on this topic.
